How to Decide Which Moments Are Worth Designing

The hard part isn't knowing that moments matter. It's knowing which ones deserve your full attention, and which ones you can let pass by.

A considered arrangement of branded materials prepared for a single welcome moment.

Every relationship you care about is made up of moments—the ones that happen when a new client opens their first package from you, when an employee sits down at their desk on day one, when a guest walks into a room you designed for them. Some of those moments come and go without much notice. A few of them stay with people for years. The hard part isn't knowing that moments matter. It's knowing which ones deserve your full attention, and which ones you can let pass by.

That's the question behind everything in this piece: once you know a physical touchpoint could strengthen a relationship, how do you decide where to actually put the time, the care, and the budget?

Here's the part most people get wrong when they first start thinking about this: they assume the goal is to touch as many moments as possible along the journey. It isn't. The goal is to choose the right moments—and then go all the way in on each one.

That distinction matters, because once a moment earns its place, nothing inside it is optional. If the moment is a gift arriving at someone's door, the table it might sit on, the packaging around it, the hang tag, the card tucked inside—every one of those details is part of the design, because every one of them is something the recipient will actually see and touch. Leaving any of them unconsidered doesn't make the moment simpler. It makes it feel unfinished.

So instead of asking “where else can we put our logo,” we ask something closer to the real question: what will help the people around us—inside our organization and out—know that they've been acknowledged, respected, and given a little love and joy along the way? Get that right, and something shifts. People don't just tolerate working with you or for you. Their desire to keep doing it grows a little with every interaction.

That question doesn't have an obvious answer for every moment in a journey, which is exactly why we use a practical filter to find where that kind of care will actually land, and where the investment will earn its place. Each candidate moment gets weighed against five things:

  • Impact — how much this moment shapes the relationship going forward
  • Relevance — how directly it connects to what your audience actually values, not just what's easy to produce
  • Feasibility — whether it can be executed well, consistently, and on time, not just once, beautifully, and never again
  • Budget — whether the investment matches what the moment is actually worth
  • Repeatability — whether your team can deliver it at that same standard every time, for every person

This is why a handful of fully realized moments will almost always outperform a long list of half-considered ones. A single welcome experience where every detail was chosen on purpose will build more trust than a dozen touches spread thin across the journey. The goal was never to be everywhere. It's to be complete where it counts—so that when someone encounters that moment, nothing about it feels like an afterthought.

That's the difference between decorating a journey and designing one.
